reading an excel file

if so is there any materal on how to do this

Define "hard"
our beloved microsoft is known to change it's standards on daily basis, so I think that for reading excel files ou'll have to have all the specifications and thaen it would be easier. but it still would be hard as hel to get around all the errors, quilks, stupidy and everything to begin with.
