In my point of view, that was a good news.
Is something missing in Delphi 7 for Win32 development? I don't think so. |

What does this all mean for me running WindowsXP Pro amd Delphi 7. Will Octane run on WindowsXP? Will there be no more upgrades/updates if I plan on only developing for WindowsXP? Will existing 3-party components continue to compile in Octane or do we have to remain with Delphi 7 _________________ w2m |

I'm sorry, but this is just exaggeration.
We have already migrated from DOS to Win16, and after Win32. That time nobody cried and nobody was sorry about his/her old codes. Why we should do it now? When the next Windows platform based on .NET, why Borland should provide another Win32 development tool? In the other hand, if you are sorry about losing the old technology, you should blame Microsoft not Borland, which this one is nonsense too.
Well, you believe VS.NET is the best. You are right because there is no competitor right know. But I do believe after Octane it will not be the best one anymore. Since I began programming on PC, I relied on Borland safely. It's about 15 years, and because of that I trust them.
I know recently we do not program anymore, we just assemble some stuffs (let's call them component or COM) together to make a crap application. The programmers want easier life and because of that the programming that is getting day after day more boring. We don't use our development tools in the best way, and we look for the best one. |

| By the way, I forgot to tell that Borland will continue supporting Win32 Delphi versions. So, why worry? |

The way i see it is that .net will add another layer on top of win32. Why should we use it when we could communicate directly with win32?.
Delphi always had advantages over Microsoft VB.
1. Optimizing Compiler. This advantage is dead now with .net because microsoft does the actual compilation. Microsoft will actually compile its VS.Net better than any other .net language! It will always keep secret APIs and tricks to itself.
Why did people dump word perfect even though it had better features than ms word? because it crashed on every windows update!. So did DR.DOS! and many others.
2. Delphi was a much better language. This is the opposite now! C# is build from the ground up for .net. Delphi will have to go thru a Face-Left.
Also, there will be VCL.Net which adds another layer on top of .net and this will make delphi slower then VS.Net after it was actually the faster one.
Now no more Cross-Plaform either (No .Net/Kylix).
Borland became a follower after it was a leader.
Do we know why is this happening to borland?. Because the Creator of Delphi is the Creator of .NET and he is with microsoft now.
If we want to follow Delphi's Brains, It is in VS.NET's Body.
I think the best way is to learn both delphi.net and vs.net then after few months one can decide.
May god be with us and give us the best development system on earth |

Maybe in short term one brain can change something, but in long term the system defines the way.
What we expect from a development tool? Removing routin tasks and making design, development, and maintenance easier. If you think without having extra layers you can achieve to these goals, you are wrong. If you don't want any additional layer, you have to use just machine codes. |

| I mean, that every version of Delphi cost lot of cash... maybe except personal, but what on personal can be done? (everytihing, that I will wrote...) but to learn newest delphi, you need at least version proffesional, that costs lot... now my question is from where you get so much cash to buy each new delphi? [i mean legal way] |

I've used only Delphi 1, 5, and 6. Generaly you do not need all versions of a compiler to write some piece of code. Even more, for programming you just need pen, papers, and some brain's phosphore. I have written lot of codes especially for specific hardware without having the chance to run them. Of course, this is possible only when a good reference or manual is available.
For example, you know that I have written a print preview component. However, I've never had a printer, I've never used that component.
However, for .NET I think that I need at least one version of Delphi .NET. If we have to move to .NET, there is no other chance. |
